A ‘gimmick’ is a trick or device that is designed to attract attention. Take a look back at 1971, and how brand new methods were used to attract the attention of supermarket shoppers. Quite a gimmick for the times!

You can also hear how language changes with time. For example, the word ‘Oriental’ is now considered outdated. Today, we would use ‘Asian’.
