You Can Now Speak Spanish With Your Google Home

Google has some buenas noticias for Spanish speakers who own Google Home smart speakers: You can now converse with the Google Assistant en español.

Google Assistant could already converse in Spanish on Android, launching for users in the U.S., Mexico, and Spain last November. And as of Wednesday, the Google Home (including the Mini and Max) joins their ranks, just in time for the speaker’s debut in Spain.

The wake words are still “OK Google,” but you can speak your queries in Spanish after that. “Enciende las luces,” can turn on the lights, for example. Or say “¿Qué hay en mi calendario?” to find out what’s on your calendar.

How to Learn a New Language With the Apps You Use Every Day

Whether you want to chat with the locals on your next vacation or stave off dementia later in life, …

To switch the language of your Google Home, you just have to change a setting in the app. First, open the Google Home app (iOS, Android) on your smartphone or tablet. Tap the Menu button at the top-right, and then tap More Settings. Find your speaker in the Devices section and tap it. Then tap Assistant Language and scroll down. You can choose Español (España), Español (México), or Español (Estados Unidos).

Google Home is very understanding in English, so hopefully native Spanish speakers find it as responsive—it understands my high-school-level Spanish just fine, terrible accent and all. It could also be a handy way to practice your Spanish around the house, though unfortunately, I need to upgrade my own skills to be able to understand the Assistant’s rapid-fire replies. Qué lástima.
