Bette Midler Responds to Backlash After Calling Melania Trump an ‘Illegal Alien’ Who ‘Can’t Speak English’ | Restoring Liberty

Bette Midler addressed her controversial tweets about First Lady Melania Trump on Wednesday.

Midler took aim at President Donald Trump’s wife during the second night of the Republican National Convention on Tuesday. While live tweeting the First Lady’s speech, the 74-year-old entertainer called Melania an “illegal alien” who “can’t speak English” (among other jabs). While Midler was initially unapologetic, it appears she had a change of heart.

“I was wrong to make fun of her accent. America is made up people who speak with all kinds of accents, and they are all welcomed always,” the Hocus Pocus star tweeted on Wednesday.

Well, all hell has broken loose because I said Melania “still can’t speak English” last night. I was wrong to make fun of her accent. America is made up people who speak with all kinds of accents, and they are all welcomed always.

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Midler faced backlash for several tweets about the First Lady. “She can speak several words in a few languages,” the actress wrote. “Get that illegal alien off the stage!”

#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!

The singer called Melania an “awful person” who “still can’t speak English.”

Why are they promoting this awful person, #melania? Was it in her contract? She says it feels like just yesterday they were at their first convention. Maybe to you, Mel. For the rest of us every day has been a horrible slog thru the 9th Circle of Hell. #beBust

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Oh, God. She still can’t speak English.

Asian Woman Tells Woman To ‘F*ck Off’ For Demanding That She Speak English At Grocery Store

An Asian woman’s normal trip to the grocery store turned out to be more than what she bargained for when she got into an altercation.

Redditor throwawaryhduwude was speaking to her parents on the phone in her native language when a woman “in her 50s” in the same aisle chimed in.

Apparently, the fellow customer had a problem with the private conversation and uttered something that prompted the Original Poster (OP) to lash out.

The OP visited the “Am I the a**hole” (AITA) subReddit and asked:

“AITA for yelling at the woman to ‘f’k off’ in a grocery store when she told me to speak english?”

The OP articulated that her experience in the store may or may not have been a racially motivated confrontation.

“I’m (21 F[emale]) Asian and I’m married to an American(24 M[ale]). I’ve never experienced racism until now (although I’m not even sure this is racism because I may have overreacted a little).”

“But normally everyone’s been really kind to me. However a couple days ago, I went out shopping and since I’m also going back to my country in a few weeks I was buying stuff for my parents and younger siblings.”

“I called [my parents. They] can understand English to an extent, but it is much easier for them if I speak our native language.”

“So I was talking to them and asking them if they needed anything. There was this woman, she was older than me, in her 50s I would assume. In the same aisle as me.”

“And here’s why I may have been TA. I looked at her and well she looked at me and we made brief eye contact(which I think made her feel like I was talking about her maybe that’s why she said what she did?).”

“A second later she tells me to speak English. I ignored. She repeated and I rolled my eyes. Then she raised her tone a bit.”

“And thats when I snapped and told her to f’k off and mind her business(in a Much louder tone than hers). There were a few people who noticed and I was too embarrassed so I quickly left after. AITA for yelling at her?”

Anonymous strangers on the internet were asked if and where guilt belongs by declaring:

  • NTA – Not The A**hole
  • YTA – You’re The A**hole
  • ESH – Everyone Sucks Here
  • NAH – No A**holes Here

Redditors believed the OP’s strong reaction was warranted and that the shopper should have minded her own business.

“NTA. Hey, she asked you to speak English, so you gave her a whole-a** sentence in English! The content of that sentence is her own fault.” – TimTam_the_Enchanter

“Who cares what language someone is speaking if they’re not speaking to you?”

“You don’t have some god-given right to eavesdrop on other people’s conversations.”

“There’s also no ‘official’ language for the USA (Assuming OP is in the US based on them being married to an American). And even if there was one or more official languages, unless you’re dealing with the government you can still speak whatever damned language you please.”

“What that hag said is racist as f’k, and I think f’k off may have been a little too civil even.” – Cooky1993

“She had no right to tell you to speak English. I f’king hate that attitude. I wish I spoke another language enough to do it as well.” – blackghost58

“NTA, no idea where random people have gotten the idea to dictate what language people speak when they are not part of the conversation.” – IrateAuntie

Many clarified for the OP that the woman was being racist.

“NTA This was almost definitely just some racist old bag trying to keep her ‘merica ‘clean.’” – DuncanCant

“NTA. She was repetitive and yes 100% racist. F*ck her and her bs.” – ItsTheBroski

“NTA. That’s racist! Were you talking to the woman in your native language? No.”

“Her racism is such that she can’t even abide being in the same area where a non-English language can be spoken, apparently. AND she doubled down by insisting AGAIN that you speak English in a conversation she wasn’t involved in? Racist and rude.”

“You could have been a little nicer, hit I don’t blame you for your reaction at all. She escalated the situation, not you. Sorry people suck, OP.” – mckinnos

This person insinuated that politeness no longer seems to cut it when dealing with instances of racism.

“I agree with everything you said except for being nicer. No, these racists need to be put in their place.”

“It’s 2020 and that sort of behavior is no longer acceptable and they need to be shut down every time.” – Break_The_Spell

“In this particular situation…I can’t really think of anything more appropriate than ‘f’k off’ to some racist harrassing you while you’re minding your own business on the phone.”

“OP is NTA, and in general you’re right. But I also think in the vast majority of situations though, while it’s important to call that sh*t out immediately and not stand for it, straight aggression in response sometimes does nothing but increase tensions and confirms their bullsh*t negative views of minorities.”

“If there’s a calmer way to make your point, I think people should try it, at least at first. Make them look stupid carrying on at someone clearly not engaging.” – Ivegotthatboomboom

“It’s 2020 there’s no need to appease to racist’s humanity anymore. Tell ’em all to f’k off.” – Wendon

“NTA. I’ve told people to f’k off when they’ve told OTHER people to speak English. Demanding people speak a particular language is brazenly rude and racist.” – virtual_gnus

“NTA. If you’re dealing with racism there’s no requirement to be polite at all. Anyone claiming otherwise is using tone policing to silence you.”

“Racism is a systemic form of abuse and people being abused are inherently likely to be very upset and angry, denying them this anger is a form of abuse in itself.” – spiderbabyinapram

“NTA. What’s up with Americans and their obsession with English? The world is multilingual for chrissakes!” – Mandypurppearl

“Absolutely racist. I’m Asian too, and I always talk to my mother in her native language, even in public and in front of people (because she’s not too fluent and I need to translate sometimes). Might seem rude, but no one ever said anything to me. NTA.” – miwa_k

“NTA. The phrase I’d actually use is ‘f’k off. Is that Anglo-Saxon enough for you?’” – Sufficient_Bag_4551

Overall, Redditors declared the OP as NTA, and they dropped a few F-bombs as well to convey their loathing for the eavesdropping woman.

Liberals Mock and Attack Melania Trump Over RNC Speech: ‘She still can’t speak English’

First Lady Melania Trump is on the receiving end of vile criticism over her Republican National Convention speech.

On the second night of the RNC, the First Lady delivered a compassionate address to the country.

Melania offered her “deepest sympathy” and concerns to those affected by COVID-19.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 26, 2020

Melania talked about growing up under communism in Slovenia and how she dreamed of one day coming to America and thanked her parents for their support.

As for the spike in violence, Melania called on Americans to “stop the violence” and put an end to the rioting and looting.

Fox News reports:

“I also ask people to stop the violence and looting being done in the name of justice and never make assumptions based on the color of a person’s skin. Instead of tearing things down, let’s reflect on our mistakes.”

The First Lady’s message was of unity for “people to come together in a civil manner,” and she said we need President Trump’s “leadership now more than ever.”

However, it didn’t take long for the haters to pounce.

Bette Midler viciously criticized Melania on social media.

Oh, God. She still can’t speak English.

Kathy Griffin tweeted, “Seriously, f*** this b****.”

Critics hit back on social media.

There’s some real venom here…. https://t.co/j1OV3hUKqr

— Trish Regan (@trish_regan) August 26, 2020

How many languages do you speak, Bette? Melania: Slovenian, English, French, Italian, and German.

— Ross Kaminsky (@Rossputin) August 26, 2020

You’re a racist.

— Benny (@bennyjohnson) August 26, 2020

Melania’s compassionate RNC address of unity, President Trump’s leadership commitment, and one’s ability to achieve the American Dream are the messages liberals vehemently despise.

I Am Black and, Yes! I Speak Spanish. – Marcela Bermudez

How are you Black and speak Spanish? “Honduras? Is that in Mexico?” “I didn’t know that Black people speak Spanish” If I were to get a dollar each time, I heard any of those phrases or questions, I would be extra rica con dinero right now. These questions and comments that I have heard all throughout my twenty-two years of living is what led me to start my T-shirt business Mema Coleccion.

Growing up in Los Angeles, there is not much of a diversity of the Caribbean and Afro-Latino culture such as other cities like the Bronx, Miami, Houston and etc. It was and still is exceedingly rare that I ever found someone who was just like me AKA Garifuna and Afro-Latina in this city. I grew up always having to explain myself everywhere I went especially at school which I ended up getting used to. I used to hate having a Spanish class because it was never a time where el maestro would ask me where I was from and then students would constantly ask me to help them pass the class ( in other words: cheat off me).

I guess you can say I was referred to as “The Black Girl Who Speaks Spanish”.  Sometimes, it felt that I had to pick a side when It came to people who I should befriend. When it came to Non-Blacks, I could relate to them through language as well as some of the cultural aspects like eating tamales for Navidad or playing Chalupa (Honduran Bingo) every Sunday with the family. When it came to the Black side, I could relate with them because obviously of skin tone and hair texture. We were also relatable because we shared similar African history but different locations due to body of water. Luckily, I was able to befriend everyone and just be that one girl that others would call “different”.

On January 2018, I was watching a brand-new show as well as part of the Love & Hip-Hop Franchise: Love & Hip-Hop Miami. I instantly became interested when I found out there was going to be a beautiful, dark skinned woman who just so happened to be Afro-Latina aka Amara La Negra. When I watched the first episode, I had a lot of emotions because in that episode Amara was rejected by a record producer because she wanted to claim her Black Dominican roots in her music. It is really tough because like I said previously it feels like you have to pick a side. I had said to myself “Why don’t people understand that Black people are everywhere!” Boom! that is when it hit me… I should start a clothing line based on my experiences as Afro-Latinx/ Garifuna Women.

Immediately, I started coming up with phrases and designs to bring my clothing line to light. I wanted my t-shirt line to speak to my community as well as relate to our experiences that only we could relate to. I felt that this would be the only way to get our voices heard because there are a few Afro-Latinx celebrities, but they do not like to claim it due to it potentially hurting their image. I refuse to be that person who does not claim who they were born to be or lose their culture trying to act as if I am from another culture.

It was not an easy process because my clothing Mema Coleccion did not come out until 2020. There were a few obstacles that led to the delay pero al fin it came out. It has been an entire month since it was released and I must say that it is doing pretty well. I have received so many messages from other people from different countries thanking me for putting our experiences as well as culture out there for others to see.

Quieres saber algo, Amara La Negra actually wore one of my shirts that I sent her as a gift! I just found it insane that the same person who inspired me to start my shirt is actually wearing it! Que loco es el Mundo pero I’m proud of myself for allowing my experiences to be seen and recognized by my community.

My name is Marcela Bermudez and I’m from Long Beach, California, My family is from Honduras and I’m also a Garifuna woman. I’m an entrepreneur who own a Garifuna/Afro-Latinx Business called Mema Coleccion.

Bette Midler Says She’s Not Sorry For Calling Melania an ‘Illegal Immigrant’ Who ‘Can’t Speak English’

Bette Midler had quite the night last night as she live-tweeted Melania Trump’s speech. To say that Bette is no fan of Melania is to say that fires can feel a bit warm to the touch. She went off on Melania.

As we report what was said, it’s best to say right up top that despite the fact that Melania doesn’t deserve an ounce of sympathy, it is impossible for us to support what Midler said. For one, she was totally counter-productive which is reason enough to criticize Midler’s tweets. Her tweets might be seen as piling on and crass which will lead some, not many but some, to feel a bit of sympathy for Melania and give Melania a bit more of the benefit of the doubt that we’re on record as saying she doesn’t deserve in the first place.

And second, some of Midler’s criticism of Melania sounds just as nativist and misogynistic as the stuff we always fight against, even when it’s applied to a person whom we often call an entitled spoiled brat.

Midler said:

#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

And:

Oh, God. She still can’t speak English.

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

And

I’m surprised Trump wants to destroy the #PostOffice. He got all his wives from it.

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

And

Melania lacks warmth so severely that I just had to turn my AC down.

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Now, again, it was just yesterday that we called Melania a self-centered, spoiled, entitled, whiner, that enjoys playing the queen and yet doesn’t seem to want to mix with the regular every day Americans. So, it’s not like we think that criticism of Melania is wrong. That’s not the point.

The point is that a tweet saying “Get that alien off stage” sounds like a pronouncement that immigrants have no place in American politics, that immigrants should keep their mouths shut as lesser than native-born citizens. If Democrats stand for anything it is that we reject such thinking. Just because Melania happens to be the immigrant – with questionable immigration papers – doesn’t mean we attack the fact that she’s an immigrant. It means we attack the fact that she has no problem attacking immigrants.

We ourselves have said it is shocking that Melania still struggles with English after having lived here for 20 years. However, that criticism is only appropriate when noting that Melania has shown little interest in getting out in her adopted country and interacting with people. Because if she had, she’d have improved in speaking English. It doesn’t mean that people who struggle with English are necessarily dumb or shouldn’t speak their heart.

The “mail-order bride” thing is just a cheap shot. Melania launches plenty of cheap shots herself, and can be awfully cheap in her actions – the pictures prove it – but the mail-order thing, without any facts, is just crass. Let Melania’s past do the talking, it’s plenty bad on its own.

The last one is innocuous and legitimate criticism. How one comes across can indicate whether they care or have empathy.

But the main point is that all of this works against the left by opening the left up for very legitimate attacks that we’re hypocrites. From The Daily Beast:

Naturally, prominent right-wingers seized the opportunity to stage some bad-faith outrage over Midler’s tweets. For instance: Dana Loesch, who once whined on television about Mattel adding a Kenyan train to Thomas & Friends—called Midler a xenophobe, while Islamophobe and actor James Woods scoffed, “The party of diversity mocks an American for her accent…”

Midler and the left might say that Melania’s speech runs counter to everything her husband’s administration is about. Fair enough, we’ve written the same thing. So why not just say that and give examples from the speech. We did.

Finally, Midler wrote in defending herself.

Why not? Just giving them a taste of their own immigrant bashing medicine. I guess they’re not keen. https://t.co/yAuMjgxqiH

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Just as George Orwell wrote, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” Down is up and we have been gaslit for four years. https://t.co/GpJCw5ZLOC

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Eh, so why not just criticize the hypocrisy and say that we’ve been gaslit for four years? It just makes little sense to give the Right ammo to say “Democrats are total hypocrites and do the exact same things they condemn.” Most people won’t believe it, but perhaps some do. Perhaps some say; “Well, Democrats will treat us the same way.”

We love Bette Midler, but this was dumb.

“She Still Can’t Speak English”: Celebs, Leftists Go After Melania With Sick Tweets

The party of diversity and tolerance proved (not for the first time) on Tuesday night that their appreciation for foreigners and accents and other cultures is limited only to those who make our country worse. If you’re a successful immigrant who is rich, white, and Christian, you might as well be the devil incarnate. And if your last name happens to be Trump? They will stoop to the most poisonous invective they can find to tear your down.

Melania Trump was the keynote speaker on the second night of the Republican National Convention, delivering an impassioned and compassionate speech from the newly-renovated Rose Garden. But while even some in the media begrudgingly gave the first lady credit for taking a much softer tone than most of the RNC’s speakers, some on the left were driven into a bitter rage.

Take singer Bette Midler, for instance.

“Oh, God. She still can’t speak English,” Midler tweeted. “#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!”

Imagine if she’d tweeted this about…literally anyone else. She would be canceled so fast you would have to hope that your DVD of “Beaches” is still somewhere you can find it.

“You are one lucky Slovenian! And after all that surgery, you hit a kind of horrible jackpot, chained to a colossal idiot,” she said in a conclusion to her unhinged rant.

Midler’s stunning hatred caught the attention of other public figures.

“The party of diversity mocks an American for her accent…” actor James Woods mused.

“Who knew xenophobia was the wind beneath your wings!” Fox Business host Kennedy marveled.

But as disgusting as Midler’s attack on Melania was, she was hardly the only one who abandoned love and tolerance for the evening.

“Seriously, f— this b—-,” tweeted Kathy Griffin, the comedian best known for holding up a replica of Donald Trump’s severed head.

Take a moment and picture what the reaction would be if right-wing figures had talked this way after a Michelle Obama speech back in the day. Hell, just imagine if anyone had said something vaguely similar about her speech last week! The world would have split open, drowning us all in the fiery hot lava of leftist fury. But as long as the target is a white woman and as long as that white woman supports President Trump, it’s all good. You can say whatever you want without the slightest fear of reprisal.

If you think this is just about Melania Trump, by the way, you’re not really getting the big picture.

Backlash is Swift and Intense When Bette Midler Attacks Melania Trump: ‘She Still Can’t Speak English’

Hollywood star Bette Midler learned the hard way not to attack first lady Melania Trump over her ability to speak English.

The first lady headlined the second night of the Republican National Convention, delivering a well-received speech in which she urged Americans to unify while making the case that her husband, President Donald Trump, is the better of the 2020 presidential candidates.

“We all know Donald Trump makes no secrets about how he feels about things. Whether you like it or not, you always know what he’s thinking, and that is because he is an authentic person who loves this country and its people,” Mrs. Trump said.

While live-tweeting through the RNC speeches, Midler called the first lady an “illegal alien” — and mocked her ability to speak English.

“#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!” Midler said.

She followed it up with, “Oh, God. She still can’t speak English.”

Oh, God. She still can’t speak English.

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Later, Midler compared Melania to a mail-order bride. “I’m surprised Trump wants to destroy the #PostOffice. He got all his wives from it,” Midler said.

Midler’s comments, especially about Melania’s English-speaking abilities, triggered immediate backlash. That tweet in particular has received more than 50,000 comments as of Wednesday morning.

People were angry that Midler so callously attacked Melania, who was born in Slovenia and reportedly speaks six languages: Slovenian, English, Serbian, Italian, German, and French.

Midler was accused of racism and xenophobia:

Bette Midler Steps Back Comments Mocking Melania Trump: ‘She Still Can’t Speak English’

Bette Midler made a few snide Twitter remarks about the First Lady that didn’t go over too well with her followers.

During the second night of the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, Midler was apparently watching Melania Trump’s speech.

“Oh, God,” she wrote, without referencing the First Lady by name. “She still can’t speak English.”

Oh, God. She still can’t speak English.

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Midler reiterated her mockery in a second tweet, adding, “Get that illegal alien off the stage!”

#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Predictably enough, Midler was slammed by Trump supporters, but was also taken to task by her fans.

Have a lot of respect for #BetteMidler but this is wrong. As an immigrant to an English speaking, after 30 years a slight accent still persists. People who never have to speak a 2nd language on a daily basis have no idea how difficult this can be. We are not all linguists.

💧clogwog (@clogwoginthongs) August 27, 2020

Bette! I love you but that was quite offensive. Please retract it. You are so much better than making fun of someone’s foreign language skills . I may not support the FLOTUS’s politics but I certainly felt your xenophobic insult in my multilingual soul. Let’s be better together.

— Jennifer Hart (@lajenniferhart) August 26, 2020

Midler defended her tweet, claiming she was simply “giving them a taste of their own immigrant bashing medicine.”

Why not? Just giving them a taste of their own immigrant bashing medicine. I guess they’re not keen. https://t.co/yAuMjgxqiH

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020

Midler later walked back her tweet after “all hell has broken loose.” She issued an apology of sorts, admitting she “was wrong to make fun of her accent. America is made up [of] people who speak with all kinds of accents, and they are all welcomed always.”

Well, all hell has broken loose because I said Melania “still can’t speak English” last night. I was wrong to make fun of her accent. America is made up people who speak with all kinds of accents, and they are all welcomed always.

Racist, Much? Bette Midler Blasts FLOTUS As An ‘Illegal Alien’ Who ‘Still Can’t Speak English’

Singer and actress Bette Midler —

…wait, is she still an actress? Has she sung anything lately? Like….at all?

Anyway, possible former actress Bette Midler blasted First Lady Melania Trump as an “illegal alien” who “still can’t speak English” during FLOTUS’s speech at the Republican National Convention Tuesday, proving once again that while leftists might accuse conservatives of hateful racism and xenophobia at every turn, that show seems to be perpetually stuck on the other foot.

To remind, for those who can’t bother to do four seconds of basic Googling, the Slovenian-born First Lady is the first FLOTUS born outside of the United States to have become a naturalized citizen – something our pro-immigrant liberal friends should be proud of, but instead use as a cheap punching bag because they don’t like her husband.

Melanie Trump also speaks five languages – and, unlike Midler, all of them come out of her mouth.

I Speak English, Therefore I’m American – Translation Blog

I Speak English, Therefore I’m American

What makes you feel truly American? A study was conducted last year by the Pew Research Center, which found that most people in the U.S. believe that in order to be considered American, it was very important that people spoke English. The study was conducted over different groups of people distributed by age, race, religious beliefs and the results were close among those interviewed, regardless of the group they belong to. When we think about what makes us feel part of a community, even if we consider ourselves a nation, no matter what nation this may be, people can choose from the more cultural and fundamental aspects of their national identity, but the most fundamental aspect of all (at least to Americans) is language. One thing Americans truly have in common is language. The U.S. can be divided into different nations; all with their own ways, mindset, laws and behavior, but ultimately, they all speak English.

It is almost impossible not to think about how intertwined cultural aspects, mindsets and language are. This topic has been reviewed before, whether we behave (as a community) in certain way due to the way we speak, or is it the other way around? Does culture reflect language or is it the opposite? Could it be said then that a person who has never lived in the U.S., but has mastered the English language to a point where (if they are really intertwined) the person can understand even the most intrinsic aspects of American culture and mindset? Some would say yes, that in order to truly learn and master a language, a person has to be aware and internalize the cultural aspects that make native speakers say things the way they do and understand what’s behind the pure meaning of a word.

So, is the foreigner who learned English as a second language outside the U.S. as, or even more, American (it is likely that this person has better grammar than most native English speakers) than someone who was born and raised in the U.S.? If language is what holds a nation together, as the study showed, then yes. This statement is obviously overreaching, there are other aspects in play when it comes to feeling and being part of a nation (political views, religion, education, etc.), but it is interesting to think about how powerful language is, even more than religious views, as the study concluded.

The Pew Study was also conducted collecting data from different countries in Europe and Asia, varying in results. To learn more about this topic, you can visit the Pew Research Center’s site and find the complete study.
