Princess Charlotte Is Already Starting To Learn Spanish

It seems Princess Charlotte is taking after her older brother Prince George with her new skill …

The two-year-old, who had her first day at the Willcocks Nursery School this week (8 January 2018), is starting to learn a new skill.

A source told celebrity news site People that the princess is already learning Spanish, as her nanny Maria Turrion Borrallo is from Spain.

The source said:

‘She’s very sweet and very confident — she’s always chatting away.’

They also described Charlotte as ‘so polite, but also fun and energetic.

‘She has beautiful manners.’

It seems Charlotte is taking after her older brother, Prince George, four, who can already count in Spanish.

Princess Charlotte’s first day at nursery

Princess Charlotte sent the world into meltdown earlier this week with her adorable first day at nursery photos.

The snaps were taken by her mother, the Duchess of Cambridge at Kensington Palace.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share two photographs of Princess Charlotte at Kensington Palace this morning.

— Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) January 8, 2018

It was announced on the Kensington Palace Twitter that the princess would be attending the Willcocks Nursery School.

It’s located in the hall of the Holy Trinity church in Kensington, west London.

It was rated ‘outstanding’ in its most recent Ofsted inspection, five years ago.

Fees for the nursery vary depending on the age of the child and whether they attend in the morning or afternoon.

The highest cost is £3,050 per term for the morning sessions.

Before starting school last September, Prince George attended the Westacre Montessori School Nursery in Norfolk, which was near the family’s home in Norfolk, Anmer Hall.

Having now moved back to London, to Kensington Palace, the Willcocks Nursery School is only a short drive away from the family home for Princess Charlotte.

How To Shop On Taobao Directly (If You Can’t Read Chinese)

You have probably heard the talk about Taobao, the e-commerce website that has won the hearts of online shoppers with its low price tags.

The downside is that it’s all in Chinese. For those who can’t read the language, making a purchase on Taobao is a headache – we could ask our Chinese literate friends, but that takes away the freedom and fun of online shopping.

Although Taobao has partnered with popular online shops, such as Lazada, being able to purchase directly allows you access to its extensive shopping categories.

Since we are sticklers about saving money and are always on the hunt for a good bargain, we are going to guide you through Taobao, so you don’t have to miss out any longer.

Homepage overview

This will be the first thing you see once you open the Taobao website. To make this easier, we have created a diagram to indicate the main buttons for your shopping ease.

[block type=”tips” title=”Quick tips“] Remember to first change the country to Malaysia in the top left corner of the page, so that the prices will be reflected in RM on the product pages.

Now, let’s get started.

1. Register and login

This will be a breeze because they have an English option on the right side of the page. Refer to the screenshot below, if you can’t find it. Just click on that and fill up the blanks as you normally would with any other website.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to translate your name to Chinese, as English letters can be used for your username and password.

This also requires your phone number, as a verification code will be sent to you via SMS to complete your registration.

After that, you should be automatically logged in but if you aren’t, just click on the login button as indicated on the homepage overview above.

Here’s the translated login form for your convenience.

Now that you’re officially a Taobao account holder, it’s time to put it to use.

2. Browsing for choices

Once you’ve registered and logged in, it’s time to scroll through the inventory to fill up your shopping cart. Just click on categories and there will a dropdown menu of categories for you to explore.

If you hover your mouse on a specific category, a larger selection will appear in Chinese text. We can’t translate the whole website for you, so, this is where Google Chrome comes in handy.

First download and install (if you haven’t already), and head over to the Taobao page. After picking your category, just simply right click anywhere on the page and select “translate to English”. Or you can simply click on this icon on your Google Chrome address bar.

The categories should appear in English as shown in the picture below. You can use this trick on all the product pages.

Alternatively, if you know exactly what you’re looking for, you can type the English name of the item in the search bar and the website will detect it. However, due to the unreliability of Google translation (at times), you can also search by image.

Just look for an image of an item that you are looking for, then click on the camera icon on the Taobao search bar to do an image search.

When a dialogue box pops up, search for the image of the item you would like to purchase. Click on the orange button next to the camera icon to search. A list of search results will appear below.

With this search option, you may even specify which area of the image you would like to search. For example, an image with multiple products:

The first step is to click on the image below the Taobao logo on the top left corner, then when a bigger image pops up, move the image highlight to the product you would like to search for. Lastly, click on “OK to” to search.

In this example, you will be able to a see a list of oxford shoes available on Taobao or Tmall for your browsing.

Additionally, if you wanted to compare seller prices on an item, you can hover your mouse over the product and a “find same” and “find similar” button will be shown. Clicking on this will bring you to a list to sellers with the same or similar item – by doing this, you can get the lowest price for your item!

Now, below is the translated version of a product page once you’ve clicked on an item – the English may not be perfect but it’s understandable.

The product page will indicate how much the item is in RM and which country it will be delivered from (as shown above). It also states what delivery options are available – direct shipping and global consolidate shipping (cargo), which we will discuss later.

[block type=”tips” title=”Quick tips“] Add items you are contemplating on buying into your shopping cart. You can always remove them from your shopping cart at checkout if you decided not to purchase them. This will avoid the hassle of having to scour through the website again to find that one item you wanted.

[/product]

3. Checking out your items

Once you have cleansed your shopping cart and are left with things you want to purchase, it’s time to check out.

This process is straightforward and just like any other online e-commerce website, but we’ll walk you through it.

  • Set your shipping address

It’s best to set your shipping address on the account management page before you check out, as you can translate the shipping form there. The pop-up form, which will appear if you have not set your shipping address beforehand, cannot be translated.

To do this, click on your username in the left-hand corner of the homepage, translate the page and go to account settings, where you can click on shipping address.

You will be led to the page below, so, just fill it up as you normally would on any other website.

For your information, “York” is the state. Like we said, Google translate isn’t perfect.

[block type=”tips” title=”Quick tips“] Set your address as default address, so you don’t have to fill the form again next time you want an item delivered to the same address.

  • Tick your item(s)

Once you’ve set your shipping address, go to your shopping cart and tick the items you wish to purchase. Next, click the orange button, which should be “settlement” if you’ve translated the page).

  • Confirm your address and select shipping method

You will be asked to confirm the shipping address, which you’ve set prior to checking out, once you click the orange button.

Just double check your shipping address and modify it if there’s any error.

Now you must select your shipping method. Usually, there will be two shipping options – direct shipping and global consolidate shipping. However, this will vary from item to item as some sellers may not offer direct shipping.

To pick a shipping option, you must understand the processes of each method as explained below:

Direct shipping – Your package will be delivered directly to you from the warehouse in China. The full payment including the shipping fee will be reflected in your payment upon checkout as a one-time transaction. This is recommended if you are purchasing from one seller.

Global consolidate shipping – All your items will be sent to a warehouse in China and weighed as one parcel. However, you must pay a second fee once your package is packed and weighed for international shipping. As you can see from the screenshot above, the price per weight will be reflected. In this case, it is CNY25 (RM15.34) every 1kg and onwards. This is recommended for when you purchase from more than one seller on Taobao, as you pay shipping fees for one bundle rather than separately.

You can also choose your forwarder by clicking on “change service provider” with this method. A window with the service providers will pop up, as shown below. A forwarder is a warehouse that receives the package once it reaches our shores. This list will also state the charges, which will be imposed once your items reach the China warehouse.

[block type=”tips” title=”Quick tips“] Do your research by comparing the supported forwarders through customer reviews to check for the best provider for your parcel. You can do so by doing a simple Google search online.

Based on our experience with Taobao, when we ticked items from more than one seller in our cart, Taobao will only provide the consolidated shipping option. You will only have an option of both direct shipping and consolidate shipping when checking out just one item.

Alternatively, if you wanted to use direct shipping for all your items, you will have to check it out one by one. All you have to do is,  tick one item at a time and make payment separately (which is quite bothersome if you are buying more than two products).

However, let’s do a quick comparison on charges of direct shipping versus consolidated shipping.

Before we get into the calculations, here are two things to keep in mind as the figures which are bolded will be used in the examples.

  • Skynet for direct shipping – Direct shipping to Malaysia only uses Skynet, where prices begin at CNY32 (RM19.69) to West Malaysia and CNY41 (RM25.22) to East Malaysia. Skynet’s prices for consolidated shipping are much cheaper at CNY23 (RM14.16) to West Malaysia and CNY24 (RM14.78) to East Malaysia for the first kg.

For this example, we will take a dress from seller A that costs RM33.69 (CNY54) and a pair of sunglasses from seller B with the price tag of RM14.23 (CNY22.80) – we’ll round up the item prices for the sake of these calculations.

Keep in mind that this is an estimation of costs because the actual cost may differ, as it ultimately depends on factors such as the seller, their location and the courier or forwarder used.

We will be using Skynet for both methods.

[table id=1026 /]

From the above estimations, using direct shipping for two different sellers would cost about 50% more compared to consolidated shipping. Hence, it makes more sense to use consolidated shipping for more than one item, as your parcels will be charged and delivered as one package.

If you were purchasing just one item, you will be given a choice of direct shipping or consolidated shipping.

Direct shipping may seem like the simpler choice, as you don’t have to pay twice, but let’s calculate the difference using the same dress price as the example above.

[table id=1027 /]

Consolidated shipping is still the cheaper option. However, it’s only a difference of about RM6 based on the estimation above. This is due to higher charges imposed by Skynet for direct shipping.

Overall, we do recommend using consolidated shipping as you can choose which forwarders to use and compare their prices. Therefore, you can get the best out of your buck and choose the cheapest one.

However, there are two things you have to consider with consolidated shipping. First, you have to pay twice, so you must keep tabs on your product status closely and secondly, when you purchase from more than one seller, you have to wait for all your parcels to arrive before you consolidate them together.  The arrival of your parcel to the China warehouse depends on your seller, some sellers may be less efficient than others.

[block type=”tips” title=”Quick tips“] If you are making purchases from multiple sellers and need one product urgently, you can opt to use direct shipping for that one product and consolidate the others. However, the maximum weight to qualify for direct shipping is 15kg.

Check the weight allowance of the couriers here.

[/block]For more information on the two shipping methods, refer to the Taobao website, which lists the supported couriers and their charges.

4. Make your payment

We’re almost at the end, as it’s time to prepare all your banking information.

If you’re a first-timer, you will be asked to set a password for an Alipay account, which is a China third-party mobile and online payment platform.

Next, you have a choice of using your debit/credit card or you can also opt to pay via online transfer. There will be a 1.5% service fee when using online transfer via revPAY.

Below is an example of the revPAY page, which you will be directed to if you have chosen online transfer. This will list the local banks and indicate the converted amount you will be charged.

Once the payment has been made, you’re all good to go if you’ve selected direct shipping.

However, if you are using consolidated shipping, there will be a second fee imposed once all your items reach the warehouse. Taobao will alert you (either via email or text) once all your items are at the warehouse and have been weighed for international shipping.

You can also check your Taobao account for the status of your purchases.

Now, all you must do is hang in there and wait patiently for your item. Keep in mind that the wait depends on the efficiency of the seller(s).

[product name=”Standard Chartered Just One Platinum” image=” ” feature=”Get cashback at the same rate for petrol and auto bill payments!” link=” ” target=”_blank” positionlink=”mid_1_text_cc_product” cta=” ” target=”_blank” positionbutton=”mid_1_text_cc_product”] Up to 15% cashback monthly on online purchases[/product]

Wait, do these three steps when Taobao-ing

Before the excitement of Taobao overtakes your bank account, there are some things you should be wary of. Because the website is a consumer-to-consumer platform (similar to Amazon,,, the transaction and quality of the items are based on the seller.

Thus, to avoid the disappointment of receiving an unflattering dress or a faulty gadget, here are three tips you should practise.

1. Check the seller ratings

Customers can rate their experience with a seller where these ratings will be compiled and reflected from one to five. In the example below, you can see the seller has ratings of 4.7 and above, which is a good indicator of a trustworthy seller.

The product page will also indicate the amount of successful transactions made with the product, which in the example below is 88 times.

The seller is also rated based on yellow crowns (highest), followed by blue crowns, diamonds and hearts (lowest) – as circled on the right-hand side of the page above next to “credit”. The seller above has gained one blue crown. These crowns are indicators of the seller’s products, service and logistics.

You can also translate the page and filter through the comments as customers will review the seller’s efficiency, quality of the product and other factors.

2. Filter by popularity

To find trustworthy sellers, you can filter your searches via popularity as shown below. This means those with the highest amount of sales (which equals to more customer reviews) will be on the first page.

Therefore, you can avoid the dodgy sellers and make purchases with the ones that other customers had good experiences with.

The example above has been filtered to show which sellers have the highest number of customers.

3. Shop on Tmall

Tmall is a business-to-consumer trade site on Taobao and is much more secure because the sellers have been filtered by Taobao. Those on Tmall are mostly registered brands, organisation and manufacturer.

However, some of the Tmall items, which include established brands such as Uniqlo, will also appear in your searches. These “sellers” are legitimate and there is a lesser chance of receiving a less-than-desirable purchase. Nevertheless, it’s still good to check out the reviews just to be safe.

Above is a product from Uniqlo, listed on Tmall. Tmall and Taobao have different websites, hence when you click on a search result, the website will automatically change accordingly.

What’s the difference between shopping directly on Taobao and using a Taobao agent?

For those who would rather avoid referring to the translation text and doing all the above processes yourself, there is the option of using an agent.

Non-Chinese readers can engage an agent, who act as middlemen that will handle all your Taobao shopping requirements, such as payment and shipment.

Some of the popular agents for Malaysians include SGshop and ezbuy.

How to use Taobao agent

You can hop onto Taobao, browse their full inventory and once you stumble on something you want to put in your cart, just copy and paste the link onto the agent website. The agent will then load the product page on their website.

Below is a screenshot of ezbuy and we’ve circled the search bar where you can paste the link to your desired product.

Here is an example of the product page on the ezbuy, after we pasted a link from Taobao into the search bar.

Additionally, these agents will have an inventory of Taobao goods which you can freely browse and purchase on their website too. Just search “Taobao” in the search bar and you’re there.

The cost of using an agent

If you are contemplating on using the agent route rather than doing it yourself, there will be charges imposed as listed below.

  • Domestic shipping fees: A fee charged based on the weight and courier used for the seller to send the items to the agent’s warehouse in China. This won’t break the budget as the fee could be as low as CNY10 (RM6.15) depending on the location/distance of the agent and warehouse.
  • Agent service fee: This depends on the agent you are using but they usually charge between 5% and 10% of the overall total which is item price plus shipping. For example, if your total was RM60 (including shipping), that would be an extra RM6 for agent fee, assuming it was at 10%.
  • International shipping fee: This is the usual fee you pay based on the courier supported by the agent.
  • Warehouse storage fee: There could be a storage fee charged if the duration of the package at the agent warehouse is longer than their allocated time (which also depends on the agent).

If you have extra money to spend or don’t mind the extra expenditure on such costs, using an agent is an easier way to get your goods to you. Moreover, sometimes these agent websites will host promotions such as 0% agent fee.

However, to navigate through Taobao to find a product link to paste would still require a bit of Google translate.

As always, spend wisely

Before you make the mistake of drowning your bank account in Taobao debits, always have a game plan to shop smart and save more.

Even if the prices are cheap, collectively, it could go beyond your budgeted amount.

Thus, here are some tips to keep you from developing a bad Taobao habit.

  • Always check your shopping cart – Set a mental budget every time you shop on Taobao. Once you’ve allocated a limit, avoid impulsive buys and instead, browse and place the items you want in your shopping cart. Check your shopping cart as you go and stop once you’ve reached your limit.
  • Don’t Taobao everyday – Online shopping can be addictive and the more you go on the website, the more likely you are to spend on something you think you “need”. Hence, avoid logging onto the website daily and limit yourself to one Taobao day a week (or month, depending on your shopaholic habits).
  • Consolidate your purchases As we’ve mentioned above, it’s better to use the consolidated shipping method to save on shipping fees if you were buying from more than one seller. For example, if you were buying from two sellers, consolidating your purchases together will avoid separate shipping fees if you were to use direct shipping.
  • Compare items – Sellers often list the same items with different prices. Make it a habit to browse and compare prices so that you can purchase the cheapest one you can find from a trusted seller. Sometimes, you may even be able to find cheaper options locally, so why pay for shipping?
  • Consider shipping costs – Don’t just consider the listed product price. Take total shipping costs into consideration and only make your purchase if the total cost is cheaper than buying offline or locally.

Additionally, if you want to avoid the hassle of translating and filtering out fake sellers, you can head over to Lazada, which has a filtered Taobao collection for your easy browsing – the only difference is that you won’t have access to their full database of items.

But, if you’re up for it, give Taobao a try and use this guide to make one purchase. Once you get the hang of it, you probably won’t need the translation every so often.

Happy shopping!

Learn Spanish Through Pop Music Using This App

When I was in kindergarten our class participated in a riveting performance of “50 Nifty United States” a song about, you guessed it, the 50 states. Part (and by part I mean 75%) of the song entails singing the names of all 50 states in alphabetical order. Now in my late 30s, I’ve been delighting bar patrons for years with my ability to still recite all 50 states, without pause, perfectly.

Music is a great way to learn things. There’s nothing like a catchy tune to make things stick in your mind.

Lifehacker reader Gabriel Wyner was tasked with learning four languages in the past few years for…

Lirica is an app that takes that idea and applies it to learning a foreign language. The app takes the music of artists like Enrique Iglesias and Elvis Crespo and uses it to help you learn Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Google recently highlighted the app as one of Google Play’s “Best Hidden Gems of 2018.”

Songs within the app and broken down into beginner, intermediate, and expert.

Within each song, you can choose what you’d like to learn. For instance, when I selected Elvis Crepo’s Suavemente I was given the choice of learning Spanish diminutives, adverbs, present tense, or pronominal verbs.

With each lesson, you learn parts of the language, similar to how you might with Duolingo or another language-learning app, but using music. Each lesson includes short games to play where you’re learning what’s actually being said in the song.

You can also just listen to the music with subtitles that show you what’s being said in Spanish or the Spanish with an English translation below it.

You’re probably not going to become fluent with the app, but it is a fun way to learn some new phrases quickly.

Why is it a good idea to learn French with your co-workers? – Califrenchlife

The French language is spoken on every continent and is the fifth most popular language on the Internet. It’s the language of diplomacy, an important language in journalism , and in jurisprudence.

It’s an official language of the United Nations, of NATO, of the European Space Agency, of the North American Free Trade Agreement, of World Trade Organization, of the EU, of the Council of Europe and of some important international non-profit organizations such as the Red Cross, Amnesty International, Médecins sans Frontières and Médecins du Monde.

In 2050, French may become the number 1 language in the world especially thanks to its growth on the African continent.

French is an elegant language and it’s perhaps the moment to expand your business to Canada, the West Indies, Polynesia, Europe or Africa. If that’s not the case, maybe it’s the moment to have a common activity which reinforces the relationship between the co-workers of your company.

If you decide to learn French for work or pleasure, it’s a good idea to do it as a team because learning a foreign language is comparable to a work challenge. Indeed, like for some projects, learning French is a long process which requires observation of details and efforts to reach a common goal: being able to communicate with French-speakers.

The French language is a good choice because 45% of the English vocabulary comes from French. It has the same alphabet as English and you will be able to make simple sentences quickly. French is a world language and will remain a world language in the future because it’s really spoken on all the continents like English. Chinese and Spanish, for example, are not spoken in such a broad way as official languages.

Like for any long process, some people want to give up easily but it will be the moment to test the team spirit. If there is solidarity and encouragements, it will be positive for the atmosphere of your company and its projects.

Learning French is also a fun activity. You discover foreign cultures from different continents and you discover sounds that you would never have enunciated in other circumstances.

Little by little, you will become more aware of geography, some traditions, cultural and historical facts and you will become more open-minded and more interesting for your friends, family and customers.

You will become a better person and you will be able to be more flexible with your customers. You will feel more empathy for the people who make efforts to speak your language therefore you will show a better image of your business.

Learning French is not limited to lessons. In order to improve your level and fluidity, you will need to practice in real life: during meet-ups of French-speakers and Francophiles in restaurants and bars, during parties with French songs, during French movie nights… You will meet interesting people who can be important for your personal and professional life.

By highlighting the fact that your team can speak French, you may become more attractive to European companies. Indeed, in Europe, employees often take foreign language classes due to their geo-political situation and because they must continuously adapt to the EU market and globalization. But if you show that you also made efforts to adapt to the others, your company will look smarter and so different than the other American companies.

The fact that most of the Americans do not make the effort to study foreign languages can endanger their society in the future. Let your company be an example for your country and a good surprise for foreign companies.

Make the difference by learning French and be smarter than your competitors!

Taco Bell in Hialeah refuses to serve customer who doesn’t speak Spanish… that’s Florida, USA, amigos – The Right Scoop

Want to speak English at a Taco Bell in Florida? Tú no puedes.

Imagine a Taco Bell drive-thru refusing to serve someone who doesn’t speak English. Can you imagine the uproar if that happened anywhere in America? Imagine, even worse, that the person to whom service was refused on that basis was a “person of color.” Can you imagine the tearing out of hair and the wailing on television if that happened, if someone refused service to a person for not speaking English? Which may not be the official language governmentally but certainly is the historically and majority-spoken national language of this country.

But that’s not what happened here. What happened in Hialeah, Florida was not someone refused service for NOT speaking English, but instead someone refused service for speaking ONLY English. Or rather, at least, for not speaking Spanish.

The woman speaking in the video is Alexandria Montgomery, who posted her video of the incident on Facebook, where it went viral. She described the incident as “racist” and tagged the NAACP in the post.

Here’s more .

The incident happened on Wednesday night, when Alexandria Montgomery was trying to place an order — in English — at a Taco Bell drive thru window at 785 East Ninth St. The employee refused to take her order because she wasn’t speaking Spanish.

In the video, which was posted Thursday night, Montgomery asked the annoyed woman, “Do you have a manager here?”

“She is in her house sleeping,” the employee replied in Spanish in a dismissive tone. There was no one else to take the order, the employee claimed.

“Honey, I have a car behind you,” the employee says in Spanish and closes the window.

“Can you move please? I have an order behind you. There is no one who speaks English,” the woman tells Montgomery in the video and threatens to call the police.

“This is Hialeah, I’m sorry,” she said in Spanish.

Two other Taco Bell workers approached the drive thru window when they heard the altercation, but apparently they did not try to help the client.

“No more, papi,” the clerk said in Spanish to a man who was in the car with Montgomery and was trying to argue that they were in the United States.

Finally, they had to leave without making an order.

“This is Hialeah.” That’s ownership talking. This is our turf, where English speakers (or maybe black girls?) are not welcome.

In Florida.

The employee was fired, said Taco Bell in a statement, and Montgomery adds that she was offered a $100 gift card to Taco Bell.

“A gift card is not gonna just solve the problem, it’s not gonna give me justice,” she told the Miami Herald. “Don’t try to like sweep it under the rug.”

Just a reminder, we’re talking about a state in the United States. Ay, dios mio.
